A new study discovered that 12 weeks of supplementation with black rice extract can help postmenopausal women with obesity lose weight.

For 12 weeks, 105 women who had not menstruated in
over a year were randomly assigned to either black rice extract (1 g/d) or a
placebo (maltodextrin, 1 g/d) supplementation.
The trial was completed by 88 women, 47 of whom were
in the intervention group and 41 in the placebo group. At week 12, dual-energy
x-ray absorptiometry analysis revealed that the black rice extract group had
significantly lower trunk fat (p=0.04), total fat (p=0.04), and total body fat
percentage than the placebo group.

The black rice extract group had a lower body fat
percentage than the control group, although the difference was only marginally
significant. Bioelectrical impedance study revealed no significant variations
in anthropometric measurements such as weight, BMI, waist circumference, or
waist-to-hip ratio.
Anthocyanidins, as well as dietary fiber, flavonoids,
and other polyphenols, are abundant in black rice. Rice oil is high in plant
sterols such oryzanol and contains nonatherogenic fatty acids. These bioactive
components are nonglyceride, unsaponifiable components that have been linked to
cholesterol-lowering benefits in both animal and human studies.
Different inflammatory cytokines, metabolic enzymes,
and signaling pathways are stimulated by anthocyanins in the skeletal muscle,
liver, pancreas, and adipose tissue. These, in turn, stimulate
anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and metabolic-stabilizing activity—mechanisms
linked to obesity and diabetes management, improved blood pressure and
cholesterol profiles, and the prevention of atherosclerosis.
