Healthy Eating Habits Improve Microvascular Endothelial Function

According to a recent study, healthy eating habits protect patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) from long-term disease recurrence by enhancing microvascular endothelial function (MEF).

664 CHD patients were randomly assigned to either a Mediterranean or a low-fat diet in a randomized, double-blind, controlled experiment. Laser-doppler flowmetry was used to assess MEF at baseline and at the 6-year follow-up.

After 6 years, the Mediterranean diet resulted in an increase in basal function of more than 80% compared to baseline, an effect that was similarly generated by the low-fat diet (p0.001). Similarly, 6 years after both diets were followed, the reactive hyperemia area (RHA) increased by about 130 percent (p0.001). There were no significant changes between groups in either MEF parameter (p=0.69).

The individuals were subsequently divided into groups based on their risk of thrombolysis in myocardial infarction for secondary prevention (TRS2P). There were 298 patients classified as low-risk, 243 as moderate-risk, and 123 as high-risk.

Even after stratifying according to TRS2P risk classification, the positive effect of healthy diets remained considerable. In the low-, moderate-, and high-risk groups, both basal flow and RHA exhibited substantial improvements after 6 years (p0.001 for all comparisons). Diet had no discernible influence, implying that the Mediterranean and low-fat diets had similar effects.

"The current study discovered that following a healthy eating pattern for 6 years can result in a long-term improvement in MEF in CHD patients." "Regardless of the type of healthy diet, both basal flow and RHA improved compared to baseline data," the researchers noted.

"More study is needed to determine the long-term advantages of dietary treatments in MEF in various patient populations," researchers concluded.
